Hearing Dogs for Deaf People
Briars Foundation
As chosen by our employees, this year we are fundraising for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains hearing dogs to alert deaf adults and children to important sounds and danger signals, providing independence, security and companionship. However deafness is more than just hearing loss, hearing dogs also help to relieve the stress, isolation and loneliness that deafness can often bring.
Almost 10 million people in the UK are deaf or have a hearing loss. That is 1 in 6 of the population and the problem is growing. By 2031 there will be more than 14.5 million people with hearing loss in the UK, including 45,000 deaf children. Deafness is not only a congenital condition or a result of ageing. Deafness can happen to any of us, at any time.
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is the only UK charity offering this life changing support to deaf people. We receive no government funding and rely entirely on public donations.
The demand for Hearing dogs is growing year on year and our challenge is to generate more awareness of the charity and in turn raise vital funds to meet the demand and support more severely deaf people in the future.
In addition to providing practical assistance, hearing dogs encourage social inclusion and provide long term psychological benefits and transforming their lives forever.
