What Do You Need to Consider When Relocating?

If you are considering relocating to the UK, there will always be some apprehension, as well as excitement for the journey ahead.  This is true whether you are considering moving yourself or relocating an assignee, and especially if the move involves the whole family – as there will be more people to please!

Get it right, and relocation can be a fulfilling and amazing experience, as well as a huge benefit to the company.

Practical Support

Whatever the reasons for relocating, the challenges and stresses can be hugely reduced by using a relocation company – an industry that is sometimes under-utilised. They can offer independent expert advice on locations, properties, and schooling, whilst negotiating the best possible terms on your behalf.

They add an element of common sense, along with practical support and a friendly ear to help reduce stresses and worries. With evidence showing that the financial impact to a company for a failed relocation can be as much as two and a half times the annual salary cost of an assignee, it is imperative that the relocation succeeds, and all parties are on-board.

The benefit of practical support to achieve this success soon becomes apparent, as things may initially seem overwhelming and confusing.  Many UK property websites are not up to date and often advertise properties that are no longer available. It is also worth remembering that letting agents are obviously working for the landlord so will be in full ‘sales mode’ when promoting an area or property.  Pets, especially cats and dogs, can also pose a problem as many UK landlords do not allow them, so this will significantly reduce rental options.

Challenges ahead

Before any plans can begin, there are visa and immigration requirements to consider, and the time implications for this. Nobody can enter into a rental agreement or house purchase in the UK until they have the correct documentation to pass referencing and ‘right to rent’ checks. We now also have the added consideration of possible quarantine restrictions for travellers arriving into the UK as the COVID 19 situation continues, so please continue to check government advice as short-term accommodation may be required upon arrival.

Opening bank accounts can also be tricky as most high street banks insist on a permanent address before this can happen. This is clearly not ideal when you need access to funds to make crucial payments.  However, being prepared is key and a relocation company can help you to pre-empt, prepare for, and overcome all of these challenges.  This leaves more time for the more enjoyable aspect – searching for a home.

Help is at hand

It’s surprising how much falls into place once the process starts. The internet is great for research and information gathering prior to arrival, especially as agents are now adapting their processes to provide more on-line virtual viewings.  Deciding on an area to rent or buy can be taxing with an array of choices but can equally be fun! Things to consider will clearly be budget, property size, safety, travel connections to work, property type, schooling and the lifestyle you are looking for.

If there are children to think about, obviously education will be paramount. Schooling options are also something to take into account and, if it’s the state school route you choose, be aware that applications cannot be made for a school place until you have proof of your permanent address and the children are actually in the country. This ‘chicken and egg’ dilemma can be worrying for those wanting some certainty before agreeing on an area.
